Going into the New Year facing a huge change in public finances, the Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore talks about what we can do to lead the country out of the difficult times we find ourselves in.

Speaking in the video Eamon says: "While times are hard there are solutions and there are ways we can overcome this recession.

"This year sees Local and European elections and Labour will be fielding a team of candidates throughout the country asking people to support Labour's vision. We can make a better society in this country.

"If you would like to help, please get in touch."

The Govt has an unpardonable and sole responsibility for this mess. While an economic slow down is a global phenomenon the scale and speed with which it has affected these shores is because of a decade of poor macro economic management. Most of these mistakes were made during the tenure of Bertie Ahern and Charlie Mcreevy. We failed to recognize or rather chose to ignore the fact that the Irish economy had lost competitiveness and that our overall reliance on housing and retail was unsustainable.

The past Govt also failed to create a national balanced development. The Govt plan to relocate the civil services was a knee jerk reaction that was similar to what a former Indian King did in the 14th Century (Mohammed Bin Tuglaq). I cannot help but draw paralells between him and this Irish Govt.

To make matters worse the Govt has now started a witch hunt to cut costs and increase revenue which is very counter productive.
