Gilmore urges Cowen to act on unemployment catastrophe

Posted on March 04, 2009 at 12:46 PM

This morning in Leaders' Questions the Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore TD raised the continuing and worrying rate of unemployment growth when it was revealed that 350,000 people are now signing on. Eamon told the House that this is an extra 200,000 since the General Election costing the public purse €4b.

Eamon went on to press the Government on what the estimated number of people losing their jobs this year will be and the added cost of these people losing their jobs to public finances.

In addition he called on the Taoiseach to 'stop dancing around' and reveal the date of the supplementary Budget which was announced yesterday in the Dáil yesterday.

Eamon's contribution can be viewed on the accompanying video while you can read the full transcript on the Oireachtas website.
