Gilmore attacks Government over bank job losses

Posted on February 10, 2010 at 05:11 PM

Once today in Leaders Questions Eamon Gilmore TD continued to press the Government on its lack of action of the loss of 750 Halifax banking jobs announced yesterday.

"The bank has a significant share of the mortgage market and has aggressively competed for deposits," Eamon told the Dáil.

He continued: "Now it has announced it will close its entire branch network to the disadvantage of its customers and to the personal, income, family and job loss of its 750 staff. Was the Government asleep while this bank was considering withdrawing from retail activity and closing its branches?

"Is the Taoiseach saying that nobody in Government met representatives of this bank over the course of the past year?"

Eamon went on to demand:

  • The Taoiseach tell the House when the Government dound out about the bank's intentions?
  • What meetings, if any, did it have?
  • What actions does the Government contemplate to deal with the matter?

Eamon's contribution is available on the You Tube while the full transcript will be available on the Oireachtas website.

I think the other point to make is that if recovery is mainly dependent on getting credit flowing again into the real economy, then banks like this simply upping sticks and no longer doing business in Ireland is reducing the amount of credit that is likely to be available.......... and we all know now that NAMA isn't going to get that credit flowing because the IMF told Minister Lenihan last April that it won't.
