Job losses in Carrigans a blow to the local community
Issued : Thursday 18 February, 2010
Cllr Frank McBrearty, Labour's election candidate for Donegal South West has condemned the decision of Donegal Meats in the border village of Carrigans to closes its boning plant and transfer the operation to a sister plant in Derry or Tyrone.
Donegal has nearly 21,000 people out of work at the moment and we need to be retaining jobs, not giving them away said Cllr McBrearty.
The Carrigans-St Johnstown area has been badly hit by unemployment and this latest news will only heap more misery on the area. Our first thoughts must be with the staff at the factory and their families. Job loss is devastating, and we must do everything in our power to assist them through this difficult period and back into employment. In particular, we must ensure that nobody, anywhere in the country, who loses their job in the current downturn also loses their home or their pension. Labour firmly believes that the Government must protect both - by legislation if necessary
