McBrearty condemns delay in radiotherapy unit

Issued : Friday 12 November, 2010

Labour by-election candidate, Cllr. Frank McBrearty has hit out at claims made on Thursday that the proposed cross-border radiotherapy unit for Altnagelvin Hospital has been put back by a further year.

Cllr. McBrearty said he isn’t surprised to learn the news that a North South Ministerial Council meeting on health held earlier this week discussed changing the target date for the unit from 2015 to 2016.

“It’s simply not being pushed hard enough by our Health Minister Mary Harney. I don’t believe she’s too interested in putting a stop to any further delay.”

“I don’t even accept the date of 2015, that’s over four years away, and patients who need to avail of the service are simply being ignored once more by Ms. Harney and her Government.”

Cllr. McBrearty said he was calling on Minister Harney to take the matter up with the North’s Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey as a matter of urgency to immediately clarify the reason for the lengthy delay.

He added that health services for the people of Donegal are not a priority with this present Fianna Fail led Government. “Every day, I’m hearing of how people needing access to health services in the county are simply being ignored and told to join the queue. Labour is campaigning strongly for a universal health care system to end the unfairness in the system.”
