FIFTY THOUSAND MILLION EURO ...WHERE WILL WE GET IT?
Posted on October 07, 2010
The Banking debate which is on-going in the Dáil feels a bit like working in the Palace of Versailles for the oblivious aristocracy while the people outside plan to storm the Bastille. I heard Government after Government speaker last Tuesday night condemn the Opposition for reflecting public anger. "Anger is not a policy", they said grandly. "Everyone must share the pain." Well, it is a damn good start to developing a policy that will ensure that €50 thousand million euros is never again robbed from the Irish people because of a complete failure to control rampant capitalism at its worst.
Bawnmore Respite Services At Crisis point
Posted on June 14, 2010
i attended a meeting / protest of very angry and concerned parents of children with intellectual disabilities currently availing of respite services from bawnmore in limerick.
It is absolute madness that the HSE cannot find a paltry €150,000 in funding to ensure that the respite house remains open. When one thinks of the scandalous waste of taxpayers money already in evidence within the HSE this situation werebye we will see elderly parents trying to cope with love ones because of reduced services on offer from the brothers of charity is just disgraceful.
i am going to raise this issue with the minister for health in the dail this week and try and have the necessary funding restored immediately.

Labour's plan for a Strategic Investment Bank
Posted on April 26, 2010
This week Labour will use our Private Members Time in the Dáil to promote our proposal for a Strategic Investment Bank. Basically, this is a response to 2 major problems in getting Ireland into recovery mode and getting people back to work. One, it is very hard for viable businesses to get the credit they need to bring their business through these very tough times. The commercial banks say they are lending but that is not the story we are told as public reps by small firms in our constituencies. The other area where an injection of cash is urgently needed is to build the schools, health centres and other public projects that would get building workers back to their jobs.
Party Conference This Weekend In Galway
Posted on April 16, 2010
I am heading off to galway this afternoon on the recently launched train service to attend the party's annual conference. With over 150 motions submitted covering various topics and policies it promises to be lively and passionate.
The conference offers us an opportunity to outline to the wider public how the Labour Party will address the serious challenges facing us as a society. As party spokesperson on health i will be replying to the motions submitted on health and putting forward the labour parties view that it is only through the phased introduction of universal health care that we will seriously reform our health system by treating patients on the basis of their medical need rather than their ability to pay.
Limericks Best Kept Secret 'Our Extensive Rail Network'
Posted on April 13, 2010
Unlike other large urban centres such as our neighbours in Cork, Limerick has an impressive rail network that is under used and offers significant potential for commuter use as we continue to encourage people to switch to smarter forms of travel.
Only last week I travelled on the new rail service between Limerick and Galway and to date I believe that passenger numbers are exceeding expectations. This weekend we hold our 65th Labour Party conference in Galway and again I will travel by train now that the service is available as an alternative mode of transport.
