Labour Reaction to latest Dublin Mid West Unemployment Figures

Issued : Thursday 25 March, 2010

Figures presented to the February meeting of the CDB show that in Lucan, Clondalkin and Palmerstown there are 11 500 people on the Live Register. When Rathcoole and Saggart are included I estimate that about 12 000 of my constituents are unemployed. Of these over 2 400 are young people under 25. For a start I propose that the qualifications/experience profile of the 2 400 young people be established by FAS and the local DSFA office. Then all the agencies responsible for employment and training in South Dublin County, including FAS, EI, the VEC, IT Tallaght, the Chamber of Commerce, the CPLN Partnership and SDCC should devise a number of relevant training/work experience schemes, in collaboration with businesses as far as possible. Instead of vapid generalizations about "green jobs/smart economy", the Government should agree to Labour’s Jobs Fund Initiative and fund these programmes for our young people.
