Pedestrian crossings in the town of Carrick-on-Shannon needed

Issued : Thursday 16 April, 2009

Labour Party local election candidate John Feely calls on Leitrim County Council to immediately provide pedestrian crossings in the town of Carrick-on-Shannon.

With the increase in traffic through the town it has become very dangerous to cross the road; particularly at road junctions such as the Leitrim Road and Main Street and also on the Dublin Road near to the town. I have been contacted by many people, particularly senior citizens, who fear for their life when trying to cross the road.
I urge that a traffic lighting system be installed as soon possible, but would recommend the immediate provision of a zebra crossing system with flashing lights. I would not like to see a situation arise where a fatal accident were to occur that could be prevented said John Feely.
The situation can only get worse for pedestrians with the recent announcement by the National Roads Authority that the Carrick-on-Shannon by-pass has been "put on the shelf"
