Pedestrian Crossing

Issued : Tuesday 5 May, 2009

A chara,

I am writing in regard to the installation of a Pedestrian Crossing on the Limerick Road, in the area of the Stereame Shopping Centre.

There is a major Housing Estate, Private Housing, a Retail Park and an Industrial Estate, Government Buildings and Offices, two Recycling Plants, a Factory, Sport and Leisure facilities and Private Business in this area and there is no safe place for people to cross the road. The speed limit is 60km in this area, even though the area is within the town limits. There are also bus stops on either side of the road and people alighting have to negotiate this busy stretch of road which also adds to the danger. Let it be noted that there is a traffic island already installed in this area so the installation of a Pedestrian Crossing is not beyond the means of this council. At the roundabout at the entrance to Springfort Meadows and Sterame Retail Park the pavements leading to the roundabout are wheelchair and stroller friendly but they also lack pedestrian crossings.

Residents of this area, both young and old, have to judge the speed and negotiate the volume of the traffic to cross the road safely. The state of the footpaths on the Limerick Road also needs addressing considering the high volume of pedestrian traffic.
