I have spent most of my career in the public and voluntary sector delivering innovative health and education programmes for some of the most disadvantaged youth in our communities, including young offenders.  I was made redundant in 2010 but with the assistance of local enterprise agencies and drawing on my own resources I have set up my own company delivering quality home care services to the elderly.  However, losing my job has given me first hand experience of the upset and distress so many people in the constituency have felt as they are forced to join the growing numbers of unemployed in this country through no fault of their own.  This experience has taught me just how much our community needs a proper job creation strategy.

I ran for the county council in the local elections for Cavan and came very close to taking a seat and for a first time out, I was very proud of that.

I am passionate about the future of Cavan and Monaghan in these challenging times. We need to attract new jobs, retain existing employment and develop local employment opportunities particularly in the agri-food and tourism sectors. We need to promote sustainable development and ensure that this generation does not suffer from poverty and emigration that our country experienced in the past.

I believe that politics is about public service not self service. I believe it is our duty as politicians to provide hope for those in our society who are worried about paying their mortgage, providing education for their children and appropriate access to decent public services. Labour, under the leadership of Eamon Gilmore, has put forward a number of political and social reforms which address these issues and which can, I believe, achieve our goal of building a better and fairer Ireland.

I appreciate just how big a challenge awaits me but I think the voters in Cavan/Monaghan want to see a real change in how we are governed and represented and now that Labour has a candidate in the field, I think they have a real choice that simply was not there before.

It would be an honour and a privilege to serve the people of Cavan/Monaghan and that is why I am asking for your No.1 vote in the upcoming General Election.  I welcome your feedback or if you want to raise an issue of concern with me do not hesitate to get in touch.
