McCarthy welcomes single farm payments for Cork farmers
Issued : Monday 6 February, 2012
Labour TD for Cork South-West Michael McCarthy has welcomed confirmation that over 12,000 farmers in Cork have received their Single Farm Payments (SFPs) for 2011.
McCarthy said: “I welcome the news that 12,553 farmers based in Cork have received their SFPs for last year, with total payments for the county reaching just over €166.5 million. This computes to over 98% of all Cork farmers, while 246 are still awaiting payment. I will be bringing this figure to the attention of the Department of Agriculture to ensure these payments are processed as soon as possible and that these farmers obtain their rightful entitlements without delay.
The Single Farm Payment is an important income stream for many farmers and it underpins the livelihoods of many people in rural communities around Ireland. It is critical that we maintain this system and recognise its role in keeping rural communities vibrant.
Another entity which plays an important, if as yet small, role in rural community life is the Credit Review Office. At present the Department of Agriculture are raising awareness of the importance of the CRO in farming communities. If you are a farmer or a local business and have had your application for credit turned down by AIB or Bank of Ireland, then it important that you know that this negative decision can be reviewed by the CRO. It is another option that is open to people and I would encourage prospective businesspeople and farmers to at least consider the option if you still feel you have a strong and viable business case for credit.”
