Seniors Must be Spared from Fingal Cutbacks
Issued : Wednesday 20 May, 2009
"With the Fingal County Council budget being slashed, I recently tabled a motion calling on the Council to exempt home care packages for the elderly from the cutbacks.
"The Council were unfortunately unable to categorically confirm that vital household grants for seniors would be spared.
"For people getting on in years certain daily tasks like using a standard bathroom can become a challenge. With a little investment, a basic bathroom conversion can reap huge benefits.
"Home care packages can make the world of difference to older people, allowing them to live independently in their own homes. Many people I’ve talked to – and their families – are delighted with the improvement in quality of life that these grants can bring.
"With prices falling and many tradespeople looking for work, the Council should be trying to get ‘more for less’ and giving more elderly Fingal residents the piece of mind they need within the same budget. At all costs, the budget for home care packages must not be cut.
"Everybody knows that money is tighter these days, but the old, the sick and the vulnerable should not be made live in misery because of Fianna Fáil’s economic bungling. Pensioners have already lost their Christmas bonus and the automatic right to a medical card in recent months and deserve some respite after a working hard and paying taxes all their lives."
