Dominic Hannigan selected to contest Meath by election

Issued : Thursday 11 November, 2004

A Labour Party Convention in Navan Co. Meath tonight (Thursday) selected a member of Meath County Council to be the party candidate at the forthcoming by-election in the Meath Constituency.

Cllr. Hannigan was selected following the withdrawal of the other nominated candidate, Anton McCabe of the Navan branch.

Dominic Hannigan was elected as a non-party candidate for the Slane electoral area in the June elections, polling more than 900 first preference votes and joined the Labour Party in October.

Speaking after his selection, Dominic Hannigan said “Pat Rabbitte is on record as saying that he wants people who think Labour to vote Labour. I’ve gone a step further – I’ve joined Labour, and I want to fight for the Party to win a seat here in Meath. This by-election offers us a once in a lifetime opportunity to rebuild the party across the county. My aim is to win the seat, and to build on that by winning two seats in Meath in the General Election and six County Council seats in 2009.

“I know that’s ambitious, but under every heading the Government, which is trying to take four seats out of five in County Meath right now, has failed the people. As someone educated in Meath, and as a newly-elected member of the Council and Chair of the Economic Development Committee I know that there are issues in health, education, planning, transport, waste management and other areas where the Government simply have to be taken on. We will fight the incinerator, and we will insist on solutions to the traffic chaos in the county that protect the Hill of Tara.”
