Local Library Closures Nothing Short of Education Vandalism

Issued : Thursday 3 June, 2010

The immediate future of the state-of-the-art Demonstration Library Project libraries in 4 local secondary schools is now in jeopardy.

Local schools such as Coláiste Eoin Community College, Finglas, Patrician College, Finglas, Plunket Community College in Whitehall and Trinity Comprehensive in Ballymun now face an uncertain future as a result of Government implemented public sector staffing embargos.

Deputy Shortall commented, 'I am particularly familiar with the Library in Patrician College in Finglas, and I know that it provides students with a welcoming and safe environment where they can develop an interest in reading, do homework or prepare for exams. Now it seems these local schools may be forced to close their libraries come September.'

'These libraries operate in schools that are located in some of the most challenging environments, both socially and economically, and are specifically aimed at students who are the most likely to leave schools without formal qualifications. These libraries have been put in place to boost literacy standards, and all indications are that they are making progress in this respect.'

'A lot of money has been spent on building and stocking these libraries but as a result of staffing embargos, the schools may well have to shut them down if they are precluded from renewing the contracts of librarians.'

'It is beyond doubt that meaningful investment made in the future of young people, particularly in disadvantaged areas, results in greatly improved outcomes, so it is beyond comprehension why this Fianna Fail government is singling out these schools at a time when they need every possible support. Pulling the plug at this stage is tantamount to educational vandalism.'
