CLLR. RONAN McMANUS WELCOMES ANTI-LITTER ALLOCATION FOR COUNTY WICKLOW.
Issued : Thursday 13 May, 2010
While I dont think that the overall amount of funding provided to Wicklow (€27,000) is sufficient to make a major impact on the environment of the Garden Of Ireland, it does at least give us some scope for new and innovative means of promoting litter awareness which will in turn reduce the overall amount of litter in our towns.
Both the Litter Taskforce and the Bray Tidy Towns Committee have discussed various uses for this funding and we hope to announce our projects in the near future.
Since the government introduced the embargo on hiring new staff, even to replace existing staff who retire, it has been an uphill battle to provide the litter maintenance services required for a town the size of Bray. It is a tribute to all the staff of Bray Town Council that we have maintained a high level of service, as our recent win in the IBAL litter league has demonstrated.
We are now in an age where we have to work harder and work smarter. We on the Litter Taskforce and in the Tidy Towns believe that the way forward must a partnership between the council, local residents groups, businesses, schools and community groups. We are already persuing several initiatives that we feel will, in time, reap tremendous rewards for the whole town and the wider county.
If you are interested in helping out in any way, feel free to contact me directly, or send an email to braytidytowns@gmail.com.
