JOBS CRISIS MUST BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY
Issued : Wednesday 12 May, 2010
Labour Councillor Ronan McManus has welcomed the call from ISME – the Irish Small & Medium Enterprises Association – for the Government to publish its plan to deal with the ongoing unemployment crisis.
“We all know the Government has put a lot of effort into saving the banks but so far they have shown little or no interest in the escalating unemployment figures”, said Cllr. Ronan McManus.
“In Bray we see shops closing down on a regular basis and the unemployment figures are getting longer every month. It is vital that the Government immediately implements a strategy to protect existing jobs and create new job opportunities. They should also be more pro-active in addressing the concerns of business.
“I would also urge the Minister for Finance to ensure that redundancy payments are speeded up for people setting up their own business as delays are preventing job creation. I have been told by one young couple in Bray who were made redundant and who intend to open up their own business that they are waiting four months for their redundancy to be paid and have been told that it might take up to nine months.
